Pakistan-born leg spinner Fawad Ahmed has become eligible to play in the Ashes after he was officially announced as an Australian citizen on Tuesday.

According to the Guardian, Ahmed, who applied for refugee status when he came to Australia four years ago, played for Australia A in their England tour, but under eligibility rules he had to receive full citizenship before he could be considered for Ashes selection.

Stating that his journey had been a long one and full of struggles, Ahmed expressed his gratitude to the Australian people for supporting him, adding that his citizenship is a victory for Australian sport and the country.

The former refugee further said that he wants to give back something back to Australia especially in the field of cricket, as a sign of his gratitude.

Stating that he would concentrate for the time being on his Australia A form, Ahmed further said that although it depended on the selections, it would be an honour for him to represent Australia in the Ashes, adding that he also has a great opportunity with Australia A in its forthcoming tours for Zimbabwe and South Africa

The former federal minister for immigration, Brendan O'Connor, made the announcement in Melbourne on Tuesday, the report added.
