Formula One is all set to revert back to its 2015 qualifying format after the newly-introduced 90-second format received a flurry of criticisms from the sport fraternity.
The new qualifying format, used in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and then in the Bahrain Grand Prix, saw the drivers get eliminated one by one rather than being dismissed at the end of each session, thereby making the track empty of action at the closing stages.
According to Sport24, International Automobile Federation (FIA) president Jean Todt and F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone have accepted the unanimous request from the teams to revert back to the previous qualifying format in the interest of the championship,Sport24 reported.
The FIA said that the proposal, if approved by the F1 governing bodies, will take effect from the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on April 7 and will be followed throughout the season.
