The FA has modified its rules in order to be able to take retrospective action on horror tackles that might not have been witnessed by the referee, after a few cases made it powerless to act following accidental misses by match officials.
According to The Sun, Wigan winger Callum McManaman had escaped a suspension for a knee-high tackle on Newcastle defender Massadio Haidara last season, which had forced the Magpies player to be carried off the pitch, with referee Mark Halsey admitting that he missed the challenge and would have otherwise sent off McManaman.
The report said that FA had announced yesterday that from this season it would be able to take retrospective action when match officials are not in a position to fully assess a coming together of players.
Prior to this, the FA was only able to take retrospective action when none of the match officials had seen the coming together or when the incident was truly exceptional, the report added.
