Spain's data protection has slapped a fine of 1.2 million euros (1.44 million dollars) on Facebook social networking site for failing to secure its users' data has been accessed by advertisers.

There have been three instances when it collected personal data on its Spanish users, without informing them how it has to be used, local media reports.

Facebook has collected personal data from its users in Spain without obtaining their "unequivocal consent" and without informing them how such information would be used, the Spanish Data Protection Agency said in a statement.

The Spanish data protection authority said that Facebook's privacy policy contains "generic and unclear terms," and doesn't go far enough to collect the consent of its users.
