Farmers express dissatisfaction against government for not addressing their woes

Farmers in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal expressed dissatisfaction against the government on Saturday for not doing enough for their cause as general election nears.

The farmers alleged that politicians make big promises before election, but situation on the ground remains unchanged.

"Elections are important. It is our moral duty to participate in election being a citizen of this country. Leaders come just before election for vote, and they make promises but for us farmers things remain the same nothing changes," said Nil Kumar Roy, a distressed farmer.

Irked farmers expressed agony over their suffering saying that government was paying no heed to their problems.

A farmer said the government does not provide them basic facilities required for farming such as better irrigation and power supply.

He also said that prices of fertilizers, seeds and other agriculture products were unaffordable for the poor farmers.

"Leaders come before election to ask for vote and they make false promises. Government is not providing us basic facilities. Prices of fertilizers, seeds and other important things are increasing but government is not paying heed to our issues." said Shivendra Roy, a worried farmer.

The district of Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and some parts of Malda are notable for the production of potato in the whole of West Bengal. Good amount of potatoes are supplied to the neighbouring states of West Bengal and to Nepal.
