A farmers' fair was organised by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Jammu and Kashmir with the aim to raise awareness among the farmers about scientific agricultural production and commercial crops.

The fair was organised under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in Kathua district.

The fair-cum-exhibition, in which department of agriculture, horticulture, floriculture, animal husbandry and fisheries set up their stalls, was inaugurated by University's Vice Chancellor, Pradeep Kumar Sharma.

"We have been running many programmes on generating new varieties of seeds, programmes to connect farmers with these programmes, among others. We are running multiple schemes and are bringing in some more. Our motto is to attract more and more farmers to such fairs so that we can impart them more knowledge which will enhance their income," said Sharma.

To help farmers connect with market, bring down their cost of production and enhance their crop production is the main motto behind organising such fairs which keep taking place at short intervals, added Sharma.

The stalls displayed latest produce under scientific guidelines, latest varieties of seed, techniques and tactics to enhance agriculture produce.

"Farmers are being told about things that will benefit them; for example, about plant diseases, medicines and latest technology. We are being told how to compose humus, advanced tractors, variety of seeds. Samples of tissue potato, which are practised in my village, are also here," said a farmer, Thoonda Singh, from Sultanpur village.
