Swiss 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer beat Australia's Sam Groth in straight sets to advance to the third round of the US Open.

The five-time US Open champion set up a meeting with Spain's Marcel Granollers after a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory. Granollers had to face 31 aces from Ivo Karlovic, as the Croat moved to within one of overall leader John Isner on 56, but he would not be adding to his total after a five-set defeat.

Federer, who won five consecutive US Opens between 2004 to 2008, said that he thinks he did pretty well from the start, adding that he created quite a few opportunities. He said that he is really happy how he played on the return, The BBC reported.

Federer said that he could maybe have done a bit better on his serve but he thought it was an exciting match. He added that he thought Groth played well and it was tough until the end.

The Swiss said that Groth has got unbelievable power, and added that his arm is still shaking a little bit.

Moreover, Fabio Fognini might have only been on court for 1-hour 57-minutes as he made a swift exit against Adrian Mannarino, but he still managed to hit 64 unforced errors.
