17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has crashed out of the Australian Open in the third round as he was outclassed by his Italian opponent Andreas Seppi, thus causing the first biggest upset of the tournament this year in Melbourne.
Seppi defeated the world number two 6-4, 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(5) to advance to the fourth round of the first grand slam of the year.
Trailing by two sets, Federer showed glimpses of resilience as he stoutly fought back to clinch the third set before losing to Seppi in the fourth set.
Federer seemed to be in control of both the tie-breaks before Seppi came storming back with an aggressive forehand return to book a place in the next round.
With this win, Seppi has brought an end to his 10 match losing streak against Federer.
