World number two Roger Federer has begun his US Open tournament by defeating Argentina's Leonardo Mayer in the first round at Flushing Meadows here on Wednesday.
The 17-time major champion overcame Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in 77 minutes to progress to the next round.
The Swiss maestro will next lock horns with either Steve Darcis of Belgium or Marcos Baghdatis.
