Festivals unite people, promoting indigenous cultures in Manipur

Tribal festivals in Manipur bring people together and send out a message of peace and unity, besides promoting indigenous cultures.

Celebrated every year, the Gaan Ngai Festival brings together all Naga tribes.

Gaan Ngai is a post harvest thanks giving festival celebrated with great enthusiasm which is celebrated in different parts of the Northeast by singing, dancing, playing games and merry making.

"Earlier, people used to celebrate the festival separately in their respective villages. Now, we all come together along with other tribes to celebrate the festival. It helps to promote love, unity and harmony," said Romeo, a youth.

"I think it will bring communal harmony and peace in our state. Many different communities live in our state and they are also taking part in Gaan-Nagai festival. At the same time Zeliangrong tribe also participates in the event organized by Meitei community so; there is some kind of interaction and close relations. Such festival creates a better relation among different communities in the state," said Sapam Dilip, Visitor Meitei community.

In Imphal, the Meitei community came together to celebrate Imoinu Iratpa Day, the traditional worship of the Goddess of wealth, Ema Imoinu, by making offerings to the deity.

The streets of Greater Imphal and valley districts were brightly decorated with colorful lights and people came out in large numbers to mark the festival.

As part of the celebration, various cultural items were also showcased.

"I came here to offer prayer. I also got to see how our forefather practice this ritual so, I feel very good. I hope that there will be prosperity for younger generation," said a devotee.

Celebrations of festivals play an important role in promoting the cultural legacy of the indigenous communities besides fostering a spirit of unity among the people.
