The flood situation in Uttar Pradesh has worsened following heavy rains, displacing hundreds as swollen waters of River Ganga have flooded vast areas.

Ten districts have been severely hit by flooding.

Sharda, Ghaghra and Saryu rivers are flowing above the danger mark in several districts.

Locals in Allahabad faced major problems as the water level continued to steadily rise even as the streets were already flooded with water.

The continuous rise in the water level has forced the locals to pack their belongings and move to higher safer places.

Pradeep Yadav, a resident of the area, said: "The water level here is increasing by two centimetres every hour, children are running with their belongings but they have no place to go."

According to television reports, at least 174 people were killed and 1.6 million people got dislaced as the flood situation remained grim in Uttar Pradesh, officials said on July 30.

According to the relief commissioner's office, nearly one million hectare of cultivable land has been destroyed and 299 livestock killed in 15 districts.
