Sand deposits left by the flooded river Ravi in fields has left farmers' crops damaged in Amritsar district.
Heavy rain falls flooded the river on the border belt of Dera Baba Nanak and Ajnala sector, burring thousand acres of land.
Farmers living in the area cultivate around 10,000 acres of fertile land which has been rendered useless for two to four years because of the sand deposits left by the river.
Major Manmohan Singh, who is a farmer, said that his entire crop had been damaged
"The crops take six months to grow. The pulses and wheat are damaged. The main damage that occurred, which will take two to four years to get back on track, is that the river brought sand deposits into the field," Singh said.
The farmers are reportedly asking for the government's help in removing the sand from their fields and in providing electricity connections for tube wells so that the affected agricultural land could be made fit for cultivation.
