The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) has suspended its president Rajesh Tomar, following reports of the ill-treatment of athletes and mismanagement of the National Para-Athletic Championship, which was held in Ghaziabad last month.
The PCI executive committee met in Bengaluru on April 4 to take decisions on the matter after Tomar had suspended four of its members on March 27. For the meeting, the suspension of the members had been revoked.
"He (Tomar) suspended four of our EC members for no valid reason. There were financial charges on them, whereas that was not the concern. The committee met and decided that his order was to be treated as null and void and their terms were revoked," PCI secretary general J Chandrashekhar told ANI.
"There were many, many administrative lapses. We took responsibility for the lapses, but to be precise, it was Rajesh Tomar who was assigned to inspect and give a final opinion and failed his duties. He tried to blame the government whereas the Ministry of Youth Affairs is doing a great job. Our members felt bad that he blamed the government," he added.
The PCI are seeking to take a final decision on the matter within 20 days.
Athletes participating in last month's games complained that the building that they were housed in did not have basic facilities like water and fans, and was replete with mosquitoes. Over 700 differently-abled athletes participated in the championship.
