Ford India launched its sub-compact sedan, the Ford Figo Aspire, to take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift Desire, Honda Amaze, Hyunda Xcent and the Tata Zest on Wednesday.

Prices for the Aspire start at Rs 4,89,990 (ex-showroom Delhi). This predatory pricing, according to Nigel Harris, president and managing director, Ford India has been decided as Ford has been late to enter the sub-compact sedan segment and now wants to take the fight to its rivals.

The car will come with driver and passenger airbags as standard, which will be a first in the segment. A six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox shall be available in the 1.5L Petrol version.

The car will be available with three engine options, a 1.5-litre Ti-VCT petrol which will put out 110bhp, a 1.2-litre Ti-VCT petrol capable of producing 87bhp and a 1.5-litre TDCi diesel capable of giving out 99bhp.

The petrol cars range between Rs 4.90 lakh and Rs 7.80 lakh, while the diesel ones range between Rs 5.90 lakh and Rs 8.24 lakh.

Ford plans to export the Aspire from India. While the countries have not been decided, Harris said, "We have a current capacity of 2,40,000 units and plan to export the car to 15 countries."

The car will be available in four trim levels - Ambiente, Trend, Titanium and Titanium +, and seven colour options, Ruby Red, Sparkling Gold, Oxford White, Tuxedo Black, Deep Impact Blue, Ingot Silver and Smoke Grey.

The sub compact segment sells about 30,000 vehicles a month and Ford is hoping to grab a decent share of the market. This car has already seen about 1,00,000 enquiries and Ford is looking to grasp the opportunity.

"We will be launching three new products in next six months starting with the Figo Aspire today. The Figo hatchback update will be launched around the festive season and by early next year the new Endeavour is expected," said Harris talking about the future. (ANI)
