Former Argentinian president Carlos Menem has missed the opening day of his trial regarding the bomb attack against a Jewish centre in Buenos Aires in 1994.

According to the BBC, the 85-year-old former president said that he could not attend the trial because of health reasons.

Menem is one of the 13 accused of obstructing the investigation into the attack against the Amia Jewish Cultural Centre in the heart of Argentina which left 85 dead and over 300 others injured.

Argentine prosecutors have argued that the attack was planned and financed by Iran and carried out by Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia Islamist outfit.

The trial is expected to last at least a year in which more than 100 witnesses are expected to be heard.
