Russian punk band Pussy Riot's members, who spent nearly two years in prison for their irreverent protest in Moscow's main cathedral, have said they still want to topple President Vladimir Putin, and replace him with a more tolerant and open type of leadership.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina said they have become more passionate about politics during their prison term, with a plan to bring about a "cultural revolution" in Russia's prisons and better conditions for those behind bars, the Guardian reports.

These two members were released from prison this week under a broad amnesty, the report added.

They further said that recently released Putin's opponent, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, would make a far better head of state.
