Gadkari lays foundation stone of four-lane highway in Upper Assam

TRansport Minister Nitin Gadkari today laid the foundation stone of ten projects in the Upper

Assam Region at a function held at Pulibor in the state's Jorhat District.

According to Gadkari, a total amount of Rs.5300 crores will be sanction for these projects. The four-laning highway will start from Numaligarh (Golaghat)-Jorhat; Jorhat to Jhanji (Sivasagar); Jhanji to Demow; 4-laning from Kaliabor (Nagaon) to Tiniali, Dolabari (Sonitpur),including new bridge at Brahmaputra river; Jamugurihat to Biswanath Chariali Bypass (Sonitpur); Biswanath Chariali to Gohpur (Lakhimpur) Gohpur to Holongi Section (Dhemaji) besides two-laning of Dibrugarh

Bypass, Digboi Bypass and Silchar-Badarpur section.

Gadkari said that National Highway Infrastructure and Development Cooperation will look after the overall connectivity of NE Region. He also stressed the need to develop the Inland Water Transport in Brahmaputra river and assured financial assistant from centre.

He also announced that a capacity building workshop-cum-training for north east contractors will be conducted in Guwahati by next month so the local contractors gets the maximum benefits through various central government projects. The contractors who are awarded for any project will be provided 10% each for machinery and mobilizing in advance from the total project amount.

Further, Gadkari assured Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi that if the state government can get forest clearance and land acquisition for construction of any new roads, then the central govt will bear all the cost for construction of road.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by Gogoi, Sarbanada Sonawal, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijuju, Minister of State for Home, Ajanta Neog, Public Works Department Minister of Assam and MPs and MLAs from the Upper Assam region.
