Gadkari to visit flood-hit Kashmir

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari will visit Srinagar on Monday to assess the damage to roads caused by floods in Jammu and Kashmir.

Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh will accompany him, an official release said.

Gadkari is expected to make an on the spot assessment of the damage to roads and discuss remedial steps to be taken.

After surveying the damage, he will meet officers of the Border Roads Organization, Central Public Works Department and State Roads and Buildings officials for a review, an official statement said.

Meanwhile, many parts of Srinagar are still inundated.

The death toll has gone up to 290 and is expected to rise further, as many people are still missing.

So far, the death toll in floods in the Kashmir Valley has reached 75, while 215 deaths have been reported from Jammu.

The government is trying to restore health services in Srinagar, where major hospitals are still inundated.

Six lakh anti measles vaccines are ready with the government and more are on the way to Srinagar. Fifty-eight mobile health clinics and four mobile hospitals have been set up in the Srinagar city as the efforts to drain out water from the hospitals are on.

In Jammu, the process of relief and rehabilitation is being expedited. However, several families in Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch Districts; and in some mountainous areas of Udhampur District, are reportedly living out in the open.
