Senior Congress leaders in Rajasthan called for an overhaul of the system, noting that every household has been affected by the unseasonal rain that has swept the country.
[The unseasonal rain] has shaken the entire country. We had requested that the state government release funds as compensation to the farmers, but the state government has taken no such step so far. This was no normal calamity; almost every household has been affected and entire fields and been destroyed, but the government is still not taking it seriously," Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Sachin Pilot bemoaned the suicide of farmer Gajendra Singh, who hanged himself during an Aam Aadmi Party rally against the Land Acquisition Bill in the national capital.
"Gajendra Singh's suicide was very unfortunate and we will do all that is our power to help his family. I don't want to point fingers, but there is something wrong with the system: governments come and go, but the feeling of hopelessness that has surfaced in the minds of farmers must be stopped," he said.
Gajendra had committed suicide on Wednesday by hanging himself from a tree during an Aam Aadmi Party rally against the land Acquisition Bill in the national capital.
As per reports, a suicide note was found that revealed the farmer, who had three children, was banished from his house after his crop was damaged. He took the extreme step because he had no means of support his family.
