Troubled football legend Paul Gascoigne has reportedly been arrested over an alleged drunken attack on his former wife Sheryl and a security guard at a train station in England on Thursday.
According to the Mirror, the recovering alcoholic, who is accused of grabbing the guard by the throat and then turning on Sheryl as she intervened, was held overnight in a cell for 12 hours and bailed on Friday after the alleged assault at Hertfordshire.
Witnesses said that the former Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio midfielder, who was held on suspicion of common assault and being drunk and disorderly, had arrived at the station in a drunken state and shouting abuse, following which he lunged at a security guard and grabbed him by the throat as he tried to stop him.
However, the report said that 'I'm a Celebrity...' star Sheryl, who has campaigned for victims of domestic violence following her own experiences during her turbulent marriage, refused to discuss the allegation.
The report also said that the incident arose just a few weeks after Gascoigne was photographed smiling and happy with Sheryl as his friends believed that he had come through the dark days of his latest battle with alcohol in an US rehabilitation centre paid for by his friends.
Despite a 6,000 pound-a week bill for treatment at the rehab, footed by Gascoigne's celebrity friends including fellow footballer Gary Lineker, after the alleged station attack, the report said that it seemed that his alcohol addiction has once again spiralled out of control.
According to the report, the assault that Gascoigne, who last month took part in a comeback tour where hundreds of supportive fans wished him well as he gave talks about his life, is accused of happened nearly 30 miles from Sheryl's home.
