Germany has urged Britain not to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

Germany however wants Britain to mark next year's centenary by paying tribute to the European Union.

According to the Daily Star, Norman Walter, from Germany's London Embassy, said that the day for them is about remembrance and reconciliation, and learning lessons.

He added that the biggest single contribution to the start of the war was Germany, but others played a part, the report added.
