Liverpool veteran captain Steven Gerrard has apologised for stamping on Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera during his side's 2-1 defeat to the Red Devils on Sunday.

Gerrard came on as a half-time substitute and was shown a red card after 38 seconds for a reckless pounce on United's midfielder, and is all set to miss three games.

Gerrard, who is due to join LA Galaxy at the end of the season, said that he needed to accept it; the decision was right, adding that he had let down his teammates and the fans.

Taking full responsibility, Gerrard said that he didn't know what caused it, claiming that it was probably just a reaction to the initial tackle by Herrera, the BBC reported.

The veteran footballer opined that he has just come out there to apologise to the dressing room and supporters.
