External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj on Friday said the NDA Government has allocated Rs 2727 crore for the development of Nalanda University. These funds have been allotted after the government previously provided 455 acres of land for the university.
Swaraj also said that the government would facilitate a process to encourage outstanding faculty members and students to this institution.
"The glory of Nalanda is deeply associated with history; it has played an important role in innovation and progress of the society. Nalanda was a magnet attracting all scholars from east to west; we seek to revive that tradition. I am certain that Nalanda will create an environment which will attract best of students and faculty. Nalanda is not a university but a tradition and tradition never dies," said Swaraj.
Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi also accompanied Swaraj during her visit to the university.
Calling it a matter of great pride, Manjhi said, "The development of the university will take place according to the needs."
The renowned university has been re-opened after 800 years. The classes had started earlier this month at the university with around 15 students and half-a-dozen faculty members.
