Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the government was committed to extending a robust social security cover to weaver families.

"We should enlarge the scope of e-commerce for sale of handloom products. The government is committed to extend robust social security cover to weaver families," Prime Minister Modi said after inaugurating the National Handloom Day at a function here.

"Fashion and design education in India also needs to be re-oriented. We need to make our handloom tradition the centerpiece of fashion for India and the world," he added.
The Prime Minister also urged film makers to use handlooms, handicrafts and khaadi.

The Handloom Day will be celebrated all over the country in cooperation with state governments.
The date August 7 has been chosen due to its special significance in India's history; it was on this day that the Swadeshi Movement was launched in 1905.
