Govt. extends use of old Rs 500, 1000 notes for utility bills till Monday

The use of old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes for paying household utility bills, fuel, taxes and fees as well as purchase from co-operative stores has been extended till Monday.

The Finance Minister made the announcement stating that the decision has been taken considering representations received from different quarters in the matter.

Court fee and payment of penalty to central and state governments, including municipalities and local bodies, will also be allowed to be paid in old notes till Monday.

Earlier, the government had allowed use of the old currency at government hospitals, railway ticketing, airline ticketing, petrol pumps and others till midnight last night.

The Ministry said, ID proof of customers will be required for transactions in consumer co-operative stores.

Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said, to ensure smooth traffic movement across all National Highways, the toll suspension has been extended till Monday.

Meanwhile, the Centre has asked all states to ensure proper security to all banks, ATMs and vehicles transporting cash.

According to reports, the Home Ministry has deputed three officials to be in touch with state governments to ensure security of banks and ATMs.

The government has conveyed to the states that if they require any assistance, it will be provided immediately.
