Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Meenakshi Lekhi said today that India's GDP figures reaching its highest figure of 5.7 percent in the first quarter of the financial year 2014-15, reflected the NDA government's focus on laying a strong foundation for the Indian economy.

Explaining how the foundation had been laid, Lekhi told ANI, "Because of focussing on the main issue of rising inflation, increasing the rates of manufacturing and increment in agricultural production, the kind of changes you are seeing is there. The kind of base foundation that needs to be laid with deep efforts has been put by the Union budget, Delhi Budget and the Railway Budget. If you combine all these three, then you can see what sort of foundation we have tried to lay down."

"When we left the government in 2004, we left the GDP at 8.4. It took us five years to raise it to this level, which is the highest. But the (then UPA) government dropped it directly to 4.8 or in reality to 4.25," she added.

Earlier this week, BJP's national media convener Shrikanth Sharma also hailed the NDA government for the rapid increase in the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), calling it the start of 'achhe din'.

Appreciating the various reforms that have been initiated by the NDA government in the first 100 days that it has been in office, CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said yesterday that the worst is over for the Indian economy and a recovery is underway

"Investor and industry sentiments are already up and it is reflected in the performance of the markets and the GDP figures for Q1 FY 15 are manifestations of that. We believe that the worst is over for the economy and a recovery is underway. Industry results and government data both corroborate that belief," he added.
