National Federation of Indian Women general secretary Annie Raja on Monday termed the rape of a 22-year-old law student in Meerut as 'shocking' and said the recent incidents of crime against women shows lack of political will and social commitment by the government to prevent such incidents.

She said that ensuring constitutional rights and equal status for women in the society has become a big 'tamasha'.

"It is again shocking, two days back it had happened to a mentally challenged girl in Haryana, now it has happened in Meerut. This shows the lack of political will and social commitment to see that such crimes are prevented. It is the responsibility of the government. They need to implement the existing legislations which are in hand," Raja told ANI here.

"Ensuring constitutional rights to women, ensuring their equal status in the society has become a big 'tamasha' for the government, whether it is at the Centre or at state level," she added.

According to reports, a 22-year-old law student was allegedly beaten up and raped by a guest house owner on February 3 after she refused to be a surrogate mother of his baby. Five persons, including owner of the guest house, were arrested today in connection with the incident.

The incident took place a day after a 28-year-old mentally-challenged woman from Nepal was brutally raped and murdered in Rohtak district of Haryana.
