Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday proposed to set up a new Indian Institute of Technology in Karnataka, also recommending the setting up of five All India Institutes of Medical Sciences across the nation.
"In this fiscal year, I propose to set up an AIIMS in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Assam. "I propose to set up a new IIT in Karnataka and to upgrade the existing Mines School in Dhanbad to an IIT. I propose to set up a post graduate institute for horticulture research in Amritsar. IIM's will be set up in Jammu and Kashmir and Andhra Pradesh.
Among the other educational recommendations, Jaitley proposed the setting up of institutes in areas that are dominated by left wing extremism.
"In Kerala, I propose to upgrade the existing National Institute of Speech and Hearing into a University Of Disability Studies And Rehabilitation. I am also proposing to set up three National Institutions of Pharmaceuticals and Research in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and Institutions of Science and Educational Research in Nagaland and Orissa," he said.
