The government has approved the setting up of a specialized agency for the production of saffron in Jammu and Kashmir, to be headquartered in Srinagar.
Named the Saffron Production and Export Development Agency (SPEDA), the agency, will come under the jurisdiction of the Spices Board.
Set up to plan and implement programmes for the development and promotion of exports of quality saffron, the proposed agency will be set up by the Spices Board, in consultation with the state government.
The production and rejuvenation of saffron, along with the processing, training of farmers, research, quality control and export promotion of saffron, will be handled by the specialised agency.
The project will benefit all saffron farmers of Jammu and Kashmir by assuring higher production and realization for the unique product of the state.
