Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Monday said that Centre has maintained a consistent stand with regards to tobacco, adding that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government would follow the directives of the Supreme Court as far as pictorial warnings on cigarette packs are concerned.

"From the government's point of view, we are consistent. We are doing whatever is required. We will respond to the Supreme Court in a positive way," Nadda told the media here.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the government, directing it to give pictorial warning on tobacco packets to promote awareness among the people.

According to reports, Prime Minister Modi has asked Nadda to go ahead with larger pictorial warnings on cigarette packets after a parliamentary committee said there is no local evidence that smoking causes cancer.
