Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has resigned and called for snap elections.
According to reports, Tsipiras has called for snap polls to counter a rebellion against his acceptance of a massive bailout plan for his debt-ridden nation.
In a televised address to the nation on Thursday night, Tsipras said he was stepping down and calling for early elections after suffering a rebellion within his left-wing Syriza Party over the country' new bailout programme.
He maintained that Greece had got the best deal possible through the three-year 86 billion Euro bailout package.
Tsipras said that he will shortly meet with the Greek President to tender his resignation formally, and added that he felt a deep moral obligation to lay his actions before the judgment of the Greek people.
Meanwhile, citing government sources, the Greek news agency ANA said fresh elections are expected to be held on September 20th.
