Green Party leader Natalie Bennett has claimed that she was misrepresented in an article, which stated that she suggested being poor in India was not as bad as being on benefits in Britain.

Earlier, Bennett had reportedly said to a leading British publication that to be poor in India wasn't so bad as to be on benefits in Britain as at least everyone else there was poor too.

The statement attracted scathing remarks from critics, with some saying that the embarrassing comment overlooked huge wealth inequality in India.

Responding to this statement, Nigel Farage, the leader of Ukip said that it was "utter drivel, highlighting a major lack of critical thinking and compassion".

However, Bennett denied these remarks saying that she was misquoted in the article and said that the interviewer had put the claim to her that there was 'no such thing as real poverty in Britain' and in response she talked about comparative poverty, the Independent reported.

Bennett, who was elected the leader of The Green Party of England and Wales in 2012, said that it didn't make sense to look at benefits and compare the figure to income abroad and the reality of comparative poverty is striking people on benefits and low wages, the report added.
