The celebrations of 67th Independence Day at Kokrajhar in Assam were marred by a series of grenade explosions resulting in disruption of normal life in the city on Thursday.

The explosion took place around 9:30 in the morning at two different locations.

The first explosion took place near Bajwi Hotel on Jwhwlao Dwimalu Road. However, no one was injured.

But the miscreants later exploded another grenade near a mini bus stand where, an employee of Forest Department, Bipul Brahma was injured.

Another grenade was recovered from the vicinity of the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) office.

Witnesses said that the miscreants came in a dark blue Maruti van from where they lobbed the grenade.

Bipul Brahma who got injured in the blast said that the car was initially moving at a slow speed and suddenly it accelerated before dropping a packet, which subsequently exploded.

"While reading the newspaper outside my house I saw a Maruti van coming initially at a slow speed but as soon as it passed by me it speeded up and the people inside it dropped a packet from the car. My daughter was also there. Despite seeing a kid, the car still speeded up. While I was wondering about this weird turn of events, there was a sudden blast in the packet," he said.

Assam has been experiencing a series of protests and shutdowns for an autonomous region of Bodoland ever since the government agreed in principle on the formation of new state Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh.
