In an initiative by a non-profit organisation of the Jain community, a new Guinness World Record for the most number of people dressed as trees has been set in Mumbai.

As many as 1,000 people, including school children, dressed as trees to bag a place in the world records. They also took out a rally to generate awareness about the need to preserve the environment.

Guinness World Record's adjudicator, Lucia Sinigagliesi, said that all pre-requisite conditions for the record were duly fulfilled by the organisation, Jayam Ideal Youth Organisation (JIYO).

"There are guidelines in place for each record. First of all it is imperative that the counting is done correctly and accurately which was done today. The costumes were verified and approved by Guinness World Records and the participants once counted have to be in place for at least five minutes," said Sinigagliesi.

The rally started from Mumbai's Azad Maidan, passed through the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and concluded at the Gateway of India.

Students from various city schools took part in creating the world record.
