Harry Belafonte, also known as the King of Calypso, will be honored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with a humanitarian award for his work as an activist on racism and equality issues.

The 87-year-old singer, who was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, has campaigned for various causes including famine relief, education, AIDS awareness and civil rights, the BBC reported.

Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, actress Maureen O'Hara and French screenwriter and actor Jean-Claude Carriere will also be receiving honorary lifetime awards, which will be handed out at the academy's Governors Awards in November.
