Opposition Members of Parliament, including Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, on Friday tied black cloths around their mouths in protest against Union Minister Niranjan Jyoti's recent hate speech.

"The attitude of the government is not to allow democratic process in the House. We are not allowed to express ourselves in the house. Every time we try to say something we are suppressed," said Gandhi.

"The basic mood in which the government is operating is to not allow democratic process inside the House. The mood is to not let people's expression be heard in the House," he said.

"It is the mindset of the top leaders of the country that democratic conversations should be allowed to happen and we are going to fight it every inch," he added.

Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti had on Monday used abusive words to urge voters to choose between candidates, while addressing voters in west Delhi's Shyam Nagar.

Her choice of words had garnered strong criticism from various political parties and caused a huge uproar in the Parliament.

Jyoti later tendered an apology in the both the Houses of Parliament for her controversial remarks and said that she did not intend to hurt anybody by her statement.
