The sweltering heat wave with mercury levels rising above 45 degrees in some places continues to persist in northern and eastern parts of India.

" After almost five years, we are witnessing intense heat. The predicament is indescribable," said labourer Sarban Kumar of Siliguri.

Kanpur resident Bholanath Paul said: " Summers are always difficult but usually the temperatures come down in the evenings. But this time even that is not happening. It remains hot during the night too."

Daily labourers, rickshaw-pullers and welders are amongst the worst-hit by the heat wave.

Drinking fruit juices, coconut water, cold drinks has become the norm during the day.

May and June are usually the hottest months of the year in India with temperatures ranging from 42 to 47 degrees Celsius.
