Ukrainian military spokesman Andriy Lysenko has said that "heavy fighting" is raging between its troops and Russian rebels backed by Russian special forces at Donetsk airport in the eastern part of the country.
Ukraine is holding Donetsk airport in spite of an assault by pro-Russian rebels, reported the BBC.
However, the military spokesperson denied previous reports that the old terminal, which is inflicted with violence currently, had been blown up.
The Russian separatists began a fresh assault recently and the airport just outside the city has been battered by shelling for months.
However, there is no confirmation on fighting from the pro-Russian separatists.
The Russian rebels control large parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions and accuse the Ukrainian government of shelling residential areas of Donetsk indiscriminately.
