Hindus in Melbourne celebrate Diwali amid rash of colour and gaiety

Hindus living in the Australian city of Melbourne reportedly gathered at the Federation Square to celebrate the festival of lights, Diwali with gaiety.

Despite the temperatures going somber, the women were dressed in colourful saris and traditional song and dance were performed by children and adults.

The Indian equivalent of Christmas, Diwali is believed to be a symbol of prosperity, bring happiness the house and where good reigns over evil and darkness, The Age reports.

The celebrations included cultural performances, yoga, meditation and on offer were a variety of Indian cuisines.

Chairman of the festival organiser Celebrate India, Arun Sharma said that the event had come a long way since starting with only five volunteers eight years ago.

He revealed that there was now a team of 46 volunteers managing the event where 95 percent of the performers donated their services.

The festive is to be officially celebrated on November 3.
