The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday termed the Indo-Bangladesh Land Boundary Agreement as 'historic' and said that the passage of the Bill reflects the strong urge to improve relations with the neighbouring countries.

"The manner in which all political parties came together to support the Indo-Bangladesh Land Bill by passing it unanimously in both the Houses of Parliament reflects the unanimous view of political parties and a strong urge to improve relations with all our neighbours. It is a historic development," BJP spokesperson GVL Narasimha Rao told ANI.

On Thursday, the Lok Sabha passed the Constitution 119th Amendment Bill on the Land Boundary Agreement between India and Bangladesh. The Bill was unanimously passed by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday with 180 votes in favour and zero against it.

The LBA aims at the acquiring of territories by India and the transfer of territories to Bangladesh through retaining of adverse possession in pursuance of the 1974 agreement between the two nations. Assam, West Bengal, Tripura and Meghalaya all fall under the bill.
