Hong Kong leader CY Leung has claimed that the pro-democracy protests were supported by 'external forces' and were not entirely a domestic movement.

However, Leung has not mentioned any name or country he thought was involved.

Alex Chow, from the Hong Kong Federation of Students said that the leader's statement might be an evidence that he is planning to crack down on the entire movement, reported the BBC.

The protesters have been denying such allegations by Leung who also said that the rallies have paralysed parts of the territory for three weeks and are going out of control.

Police and protesters also entered into a scuffle amid tense stand offs in recent days.

Demonstrators are protesting against Beijing's decision to vet candidates in the 2017 Hong Kong elections. They have blocked parts of the city and have been demanding a fully free election.
