Hundreds of people from all walks of life took to the streets here on Saturday to express solidarity with Dr Govinda K. C., who has been staging a fast-undo-death demanding reforms in Nepal's medical sector.
The protesters gathered at Maitighar Mandala and staged a rally in front of the Parliament building, reports the Himalayan Times.
The demonstrators carried placards and banners with the messages urging the government to address the demands of senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda.
They also demanded the lawmakers to seriously take note of the concerns, which have been raised by the fasting doctor, and address the demands.
Various political parties, including Baburam Bhattarai-led Naya Shakti Nepal and Ujwal Thapa-led Bibeksheel Nepali, also formally backed the movement.
Dr Govinda is on a hunger strike since July 10 at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital putting forth four major demands of reforms in the country's medical sector.
He has accused Commission of Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) Chief Commissioner Lok Man Singh Karki of protecting various corrupt people in the medical education sector and argued that the latter breached his jurisdiction as he interfered in the affairs of Kathmandu University.
|He has also demanded impeachment motion against CIAA Commissioner Raj Narayan Pathak while stating that he was also involved in activities against the dignity of his position.
His other demand includes improvement in a draft of the Medical Education Act with objectives to establish at least a medical college in all provinces.
