The young and the old gathered in hundreds in Kolkata today to take part in a marathon to create awareness about the cancer disease and support the underprivileged cancer patients.

From celebrities to corporate to school children, participants beat the chill as they ran for the noble cause for over 42 kilometres along the city streets.

The first three winners of the marathon run were also awarded with cash prizes.

Dignitaries invited to inaugurate the race, lit up the marathon torch to announce its commencement.

Former captain of Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly, was also present at the event to encourage the participants.

Supporting the 'fantastic' cause, he said one should also understand the issue.

"It is for cancer patients. You can understand about the issue and how and what the organisers of this event to do for the people of Kolkata and also for India. So it's for a fantastic cause," said Ganguly.
