The Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday passed an order directing the Telangana government to allow protests to be held at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park here for a period of six weeks.

Dharna Chowk, which was one of the major points of protest in the city, was closed down by the state government about a year and a half ago citing law and order as a reason.

A division bench of the High Court passed the order after taking up suo motu a letter written by a former university professor, Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao and CPI leader Chada Venkat Reddy.

The court further said that it will hear the case after six weeks.

After the court's verdict, Rao, while speaking to ANI, welcomed the court's verdict and accused the Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao's (KCR) government of closing the Chowk just to silence the voice of the opposition parties.

Telangana Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Krishna Sagar Rao also welcomed the move and said that the court's verdict is a slap on the KCR government's face.
