Indian Air Force Chief Norman Anil Kumar Browne inaugurated an annual commanders' conference here on Friday and reviewed the induction of new technology and weapon systems.

In recent years, India has emerged as the world's largest weapons importer, but procurements are periodically held up by allegations of corruption.

Earlier in the year, AgustaWestland, a division of Italian defence group Finmeccanica, faced allegations in Italy and India, that it paid bribes to win a 750 million dollars deal to supply VIP helicopters to transport Indian political leaders.

Finmeccanica and AgustaWestland have denied paying bribes. Italian police had arrested the head of Finmeccanica, Giuseppe Orsi, in connection with the case.

The case has put pressure on Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh whose government has been buffeted by a string of graft cases. The ruling Congress party is expected to face a tough fight for a third term in office in elections due by 2014.
