Former New Zealand wicketkeeper batsman Ian Smith has slammed Brendon McCullum's side for displaying an inconsistent performance on the opening day of the first Test against Australia in Brisbane.

New Zealand's tour match against the Cricket Australia was abandoned less than a week ago due to the wicket's deteriorating surface becoming unfit for first-class cricket in Sydney.

Earlier on Thursday, David Warner and Usman Khawaja weathered New Zealand pace bowling attack as they slammed contrasting centuries to put Australia in a commanding 389-2 at stumps.

Admitting that the Black Caps should have played more cricket in the lead-up to the Gabba Test, Smith said that New Zealand didn't look cricket-fit and consistent enough, News.com.au reported.

According to Smith, New Zealand, who are aiming to register their first series in Australian soil in 30 years, didn't look ready for the heat and conditions.

The second Test will be played in Perth before the Trans-Tasman rivals play each other in Test cricket's first day-night fixture in Adelaide.
