Legendary New Zealand commentator Ian Smith has claimed that the passing of his friend, former Australian cricketer and iconic broadcaster Richie Benaud is hellishly sad, insisting that the late commentator was the nicest bloke he has ever met.

The former New Zealand cricketer and current commentator was coming to terms with the departure of Benaud, a public figure and cricketing legend internationally, who passed away on Friday aged 84 after battling skin cancer since November.

Smith commentated with Benaud for six consecutive summers in England and at numerous World Cups around the world, Stuff.co.nz reported.

The former wicketkeeper said that it was testament to the influence of the man that people who don't even knew Benaud loved him for who he was and what he did and how he did it. He claimed that people that worked with the commentating doyen were immensely privileged to do so and they would treasure the time with him.

And, Smith added that of course, cricketers in general - some that haven't even met Benaud but he has described over the years - they would take time out to reflect.

Smith claimed that it's the passing of one of Australia's true treasures, adding that Benaud is a cricketing treasure.

Smith also said that Benaud was the true definition of a gentleman. He said that the late legspinner had old fashioned values in terms of politeness and etiquette and respect for others, adding that he was immaculately dressed, always.

Smith claimed that whether it be golf, going to the airport, going to cricket, going to breakfast or dinner, Benaud would always be immaculately dressed the whole time, adding that the Australian was a beautifully presented and tailored man.
