Imphal Court on Friday sentenced N. Ajay Singh, son of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader N. Biren Singh, to five years in prison and levied Rs 50, 000 fine for a culpable homicide in a 2011 firing incident in which Irom Roger, 21, was killed.
The court also directed Ajay Singh to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the deceased's family.
The former irrigation and flood control minister's son Ajay, then 27, shot at Roger with his licensed pistol at Ghari, along Imphal Airport road, on March 20. Ajay and four of his friends were arrested the same day.
According to police, Ajay's car overtook the one in which Irom was travelling with his friends. When Roger's car overtook Ajay's, the ex-minister's son, apparently angered by the action, fired from his pistol, hitting Roger in the neck.
The Okram Ibobi Singh government handed over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which named Ajay as the primary suspect in the chargesheet.
