India on Friday said that it was closely monitoring the unfolding situation in Thailand and called for an urgent political resolution and restoration of normalcy based on the principles of democracy, the will of the people and the rule of law in that country.

In response to media queries on the situation in Thailand, the Official Spokesperson of the MEA, Syed Akbaruddin said: "India is concerned with the recent developments in Thailand. We are monitoring the evolving situation closely. The Indian community in Thailand is safe."

"As a friendly neighbour, with civilizational affinities, we hope for an urgent political resolution and restoration of normalcy based on the principles of democracy, the will of the people and the rule of law in Thailand," he added.

In response to a media query on Indian troops in Thailand for Maitree exercise, the Official Spokesperson said: "Our troops, currently in Thailand for Maitree exercises, have been advised to return to India."

Thailand was placed under curfew after the nation's army announced on Thursday that it had taken control and suspended the constitution following months of political turmoil.

The army, which declared martial law on Tuesday, said it needed to restore order and enact political reforms.

It had intially started talks with several key figures, including opposition protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban and pro-government protest leader Jatuporn Prompan. But General Prayuth Chan-ocha later declared that a coup had taken place and that the army would now be in charge.
