Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that India and Maldives stand shoulder to shoulder, even as New Delhi mounted enormous efforts to provide assistance to Male after the island nation faced shortage of drinking water in its capital.
Prime Minister Modi took to twitter to share the relations between the two SAARC members.
"Recently I had a fruitful meeting with President Abdulla Yameen. We are committed to extending a helping hand to the best of our abilities," he wrote.
The Prime Minister also mentioned a meeting he had had with that nation's former president, Mohamed Nasheed.
"I assure you President @MohamedNasheed that India stands shoulder to shoulder with Maldives and together we will take our ties further ahead," tweeted.
Prime Minister Modi also retweeted the posts of several leaders from the island nation.

"Our deepest appreciation to PM @narendramodi and Govt. of India for the urgent aid provided due to #MaleWaterCrisis," Vice President Mohamed Jameel Ahmed tweeted, also posting a picture of an Indian Air Force plane which had airlifted water to Male.
The Prime Minister also stated that India and Maldives are always there to help each other out.
"President @MohamedNasheed I welcome your sentiments and want to add that as friends, our nations are always there to help each other," he tweeted.
According to reports, water supply to more than 100,000 residents in the Maldives capital was cut off, after the city's water treatment plant caught fire.
The country has reportedly appealed to India, Sri Lanka, China and the United States for help.
